I Mentor a couple of amazing undergraduate students whose interests include paleoepigenetic, anti-violence, feminist, & queer scholarship.

Samantha M. Archer
 

Samantha (sam) Archer is a Kuhn Scholar and second-degree seeking undergraduate pursuing a B.S. in biology at the University of Texas at Austin. She received her B.A. in Anthropology and Women’s and Gender Studies from the UT in 2014. Originally as an undergraduate, she was a member of the 3rd Peers for Pride cohort, and worked with both the Gender & Sexuality Center and Voices Against Violence as a student staff member. She hopes to attend graduate school for molecular anthropology and science and technology studies.

Samantha is currently using ancient DNA to study the bio-social contexts of sacrifice among the post-classic maya. Her other research interests include the history and philosophy of science, queer and feminist interpretations of science, and the epigenetic Effects of violence and trauma.

 

SANA SABOOWALA IS A MELLON-MAYS UNDERGRADUATE FELLOW PURSUING A B.S.A. IN BIOLOGY AND A B.A. IN ANTHROPOLOGY FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS. SHE HOPES TO ATTEND GRADUATE SCHOOL FOR ANTHROPOLOGY WITH A FOCUS ON BIOARCHAEOLOGY. ON CAMPUS SHE IS INVOLVED WITH CENTRAL TEXAS MODEL UNITED NATIONS, SERVED AS PRESIDENT OF UNDERGRADUATE MUSEUM STUDIES GUILD, AND WORKS AS THE GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS ASSISTANT AT THE PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY.

SANA IS CURRENTLY WORKING ON A PROJECT ENTITLED “THE BIOLOGY OF SOCIAL OUTSIDERS FROM ANCIENT SOCIETIES". IN THIS RESEARCH, SANA IS CONDUCTING IN-DEPTH CASE STUDIES OF CLASS, GENDER, AND ETHNIC OTHERness IN THE WARI State of the south central andes. BY RECONSTRUCTING EPIGENETIC MARKS FROM ANCIENT DNA, SHE HOPES TO ELUCIDATE THE BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF BEING MARKED AS A SOCIAL OUTSIDER IN ANCIENT societies. HER OTHER RESEARCH INTERESTS INCLUDE OSTEOLOGY, EPIGENETICS, AND MUSEUM STUDIES.
